Walter Williams (fellow DNN'er) will be speaking about Windows Services at the next Space Coast .Net User Group meeting.

Windows Services

Windows Services are becoming more important to applications. With .NET, they can be built by any developer, not just someone knowledgeable about C++.

A Windows Service is an application that runs in the background and does not require a user to be logged into the computer. This session will cover what a Windows Service is and some examples of usage, the sections and code needed for creating and/or maintaining a Windows Service, how to communicate with other applications and some general tips for designing and building your own Windows Service. Two different install methods will also be covered.

Windows Services - Manage an EXE w/o logging in

Windows Services are becoming more important to applications. With .NET, they can be built by any developer, not just someone knowledgeable about C++.

This presentation will take you through the code needed to have a Windows Service manage a EXE. The reason you need this is because you have an EXE that you have log in to run, and then you have to leave the account logged in. With this Windows Service example, you will be shown a way to run this EXE at the time the computer starts.

Walter Williams is a Sr. Developer who has been designing and developing software for over 25 years. He has been using Visual Basic since version 3. Currently most of the work he does for clients and for his company is using Visual Basic .NET, although there is still some Visual Basic 6 work being done. He owns CHB Consulting, Inc. (www.CHB-Consulting.com) out of Rockledge, FL, which has several software products on the market. He also works contracts for outside clients. This gives him a wide range of skills.
