ODUG News

                ODUG Meeting is NEXT TUESDAY!

We are very excited to announce that our next meeting is still an ODUG
meeting, but we will be having a joint meeting for the first time, ever!
The folks at the ONETUG love our meeting topic, speaker, and idea so much
that they are changing their meeting date to be with US.

This means that the ODUG and ONETUG will both be meeting at Orlando City
Hall next Tuesday, May 4th. However, the meeting time has changed for this
meeting as well. In order to fit in all of the content, we are starting
a bit earlier than usual, at 6:30 PM.

				Our speaker, Nik Kalyani,
is not only the co-founder of the DotNetNuke®
Corporation, but he is also the founder of a new technology start-up called
				HyperCrunch. He
is not only bringing himself, but he is bringing some incredible prizes with
him! Nik has a new concept for meetings called a Hackathon, where the
attendees follow along with the presenter to learn the topic and have a
working example at the end of the meeting. If you have the best working
example, you have the chance to win a cherry red Dell Vostro 3500,
or one of (2) Acer netbooks!

				Hackathon Sponsored By:

                Mini-Presentation: Using the MarkIt Module

Forget about pop-ups! MarkIt has a great module that allows you to have
an interactive and fun way of getting your visitor's attention - a page
ear! Using just two images and an easy to use module, you can create a
very fun way for your website customer to interact with your brand!

If you are interested in having a 5-10 minute spot at any of the next
				meetings, please use the contact
form on our website. Describe in detail what you want to talk

idea for a short topic that you'd like to hear more about, those comments
				are very welcome too!

Question:
What is the right way to build a sadnbox environment for DNN? If I try to run a local copy of the DNN website code in the Vs debugger, and the connection string points to a production environment, I seem to end up in the production environment - and I inherit all of the MS problems associated with trying to mess with a website on a remote share.

I was able to debug my import by attaching to the process on the server.

The only thing I ever find myself doing is getting a working instance of DNN installed. This will change only slighty for a dev environment. For example, you will want to make sure it has its own database instance, and it is running in debug mode (web.config).

Once that is done, I would suggest writing your modules using the WAP way, and not WSP. This means, building your modules similar to a library project, and not similar to a web site project.

The easiest way to get your first module created is to take a simple Core module like the Links module, and install the source version of it. Then, begin changing everything that you need to make it your own Links module (namespaces, project names, sql script references, etc.). From that point forward, you will have a working clean slate to begin all of your module development with.

Part Time .NET / Application Developer Opportunity, Schenck Company

Send resumes to: hcounts@schenck.com For any direct inquiries, please call 407-532-8766

ODUG Meeting Format Change

Beginning at this month's meeting (next week), we will have a 5-10
presentation before our guest speaker who will show us all something cool
and unrelated to the evenings topic.

If you are interested in having a 5-10 minute spot at any of the next
meetings, please use the contact

hear more about, those comments are very welcome too!

ODUG Meeting is Next Tuesday

Over the past year, we as a user group have been seeing a lot of interest in
developing on the DotNetNuke® platform. However, we welcome Joseph
Craig next week who will show us all that we don't need to necessarily
develop modules for DNN. There is a product out there called DotNetMushroom
Rapid Application Development. Joe will show us how to save time, money,
and headaches using this wizard-based DNN development tool.

Pre-Presentation: DotNetNuke Professional

We have all heard all kinds of things about the Professional Edition of
DotNetNuke®, but few of us have actually seen it. Our very own
DotNetNuke® Speaker Idol 2009 winner, Darrell Hardy, will be
showing us all what we're missing!

Of course he was nice enough to give me two weeks to get the system designed, built, tested and deployed. So I need as much off the shelf modules as I can get .

The system needs to be able to allow the user to register on-line.

They must pay $25 to register (Authorize.net is preferred, PayPal is a distant second option).

Standard contact fields, plus a couple of custom fields need to be collected.

It would be nice to be able to validate some of the users data against a third party API, but that isn't critical.

The user needs to be able to review their account and make changes to profile entries.

The administrators need to be able to manually alter users profiles and subscription status.

Of course, the registration and user profile pages really need to be more templatable and stylable than the default DNN controls.

Be able to export all registrants to CSV or other loadable formats

Be able to access the registrant data easily in the database (not buried too far into XML strings or JSON strings) for internal queries.

I am guessing that some kind of subscription control combined with some kind of user profile control would be just what I need. But I just don't have a lot of time to benchmark a bunch of commercial systems and was wondering if any of you had experience with a system that I could plug in to do this.

Data Springs Dynamic Registration is one option that I am looking at. Maybe the whole User Management Suite.

But on the other hand, I have been thinking of some kind of CRM system for managing all of those users. I just don't know if those kinds of tools will integrate with the DNN users information.

Or maybe just roll my own with some kind of quick module writing? I can do that too, but I would rather have it built from a standard module. I hate having to write all my own Authorize.net communcations and the like.

Anyway, hope to see everyone at the meeting tonight.

What is the simplest way to style container menus. Here is an example that shows what I am looking to do:

The following menu is hard to read and I would like to restyle it:

Here is a nicely styled menu, that I would like to acheive:

Here is the code for the container that I am creating (The container that I am creating is transperant, which is desired, but the menus are transparent and that is not desired):

DNN Expertise needed in Central Florida

Will- thanks for the follow up. The person will need to be onsite for the client discovery here in Orlando ( or I will try to hook up a vchat) but the work will be done working remotely. Just knowing our client though, although the consultant will be offsite, the company still would rather have someone local to Central Florida.

Why Should You Come to the ODUG Meetings?

It doesn't matter what your expertise is, or how you use DotNetNuke®.
The best part of the meetings is talking to other DNN people and learning
from them. You can easily get a problem solved in minutes with a short
conversation, compared to a forum post literally lasting days.

                ODUG Meeting is Next Tuesday!

all the way from Canada to speak to us. Paul will be showing us some
of the ways that we can manage our DotNetNuke® sites using SQL Server.

will be showing us how to create skins for DotNetNuke® fast and easy using Artisteer.
The best part is that he is not a designer. That means that everyone will get
something out of this meeting. If you're a designer, this will give you one
more tool. If you're not, then this will be your only tool! :)

There's a reason that Brian titled this session "Now Newbies can Create DotNetNuke Skins."
You can be a skin designer with little to no design experience.

ODUG Meeting is NEXT TUESDAY!

Next Tuesday, the ODUG has the distinct pleasure and honor of welcoming back Joe Brinkman
to Orlando. As excited as we may be to have him, he is doubly-excited to escape the Ohio
winter! :)

Joe will be talking all about XSLT, and how and where it can be used and leaveraged in
DNN. From what he's told me, there are places to use it to make your life easier that
you might have never thought of.

Tampa DotNetNuke® User Group

Lucky Joe! He gets to visit two user groups in Florida in the same week. I think he is
going to be showing us all about the widget framework in DNN. Designers and programmers
alike should attend this one. If you can swing a trip to Tampa next Wednesday, be sure
to register
for their meeting.

December Meeting Speaker Materials: DotNetNuke Speaker Idol

If you missed last months meeting, boy did you pick the wrong one to miss!
We had several great presentations, and by all accounts, the meeting was a
smashing success!

Presentation Materials: download

November Meeting Speaker Materials: Antonio Chagoury

A couple of months ago, Antonio Chargoury was very generous in flying down from our
nations capital to speak to our UG about consuming RESTful services in DNN. He has
posted
his presentation materials on his blog. Enjoy!
